OUR REQUEST TO THE COUNCIL
  • Let us:
WHEREAS the community would like to work through all available options for maintaining the LHD in the best interests of the community and its environment in an “adult conversation”   so as to promote the State’s legitimate concerns without destroying this community asset and be able to consider the pros and cons of all alternatives;

WHEREAS the Hamakua community is currently in the process of drafting a Community Development Plan, however that Plan has not been completed and at this time there is no Community Development Plan Action Committee and therefore residents of Hamakua are asking for the County Council and the Mayor advocate for their concerns;

THEREFORE we ask the County of Hawai’i to ask the State of Hawai‘i to enable a public process on this matter before irrevocable decisions are made. Such a process may include updating the 1999 EIS and holding the required public hearings for agricultural irrigation projects (Section 171-17).  Additionally, the County respectfully request that any final State decision concerning the LHD be delayed until a Hamakua Community Development Plan Action Committee is created in order to allow the community to consider the various alternatives within the context of the above policies and principles.

  • May include updating 1999 EIS and holding the required public hearings for agricultural irrigation projects (Section 171-17).
  • Request that the State delay final LHD decisions until a Hamakua CDP Action Committee is created, to allow community to consider alternatives.

  • Engage the State and others in an adult conversation
  • Together promote the State’s legitimate concerns without destroying this community asset.
  • Consider all available options for maintaining the LHD in the best interests of the community and its environment.
  • The Hamakua CDP is not completed – no committee.
  • Request the County Council and Mayor advocate for our concerns.
  • The Community Development Plan normally would provide us with a voice through the CDP Committee.
